Almost Home (Longest. Layover. Ever)

I know what you’re thinking, “you guys got back to the U.S. Last October,” (or possibly, “uh… I thought you were dead.”) This is technically true (the first part, not the dead part) however, due to some bad timing, we’ve had a bit of a layover.

You see, when we got back and planted our feet on sweet Southern soil we still had some nice folks still renting our house and in order to make everything work they had to stay a while. So for the last several months we have been living in the town of Summerville, SC.

It’s not a bad place, and if we worked there it would be great, good food and friendly people. Since we don’t work there though, geographically speaking it makes our lives, uh, complicated. In one word, “Dorchester”. Strictly speaking it’s a road, but in practice it’s more of a parking lot. Me, Amy, and a few other thousand people use it to get into Charleston in the morning and back again and there are few alternatives (I’ve looked, tried, and well, they suck too ). To game the system we wake early and run the gauntlet before the others have had enough coffee to drive, but there’s no such luck in the afternoons. There the traffic becomes an interesting mix of “Driving Miss Daisy” and “Fast and Furious” where slow people wreck in just the right spots to backup the entire city and the fast ones cut people off and drive in a way that would make any Southern Italian proud. Needless to say we’re looking forward to getting to our final destination of 841 Bent Hickory where the commute doesn’t even touch this life sucking stretch of road (too much?). This should be before Thanksgiving.

It’s not all traffic jams and early mornings though. It’s been good to be back in the States. For the last few months we have been getting caught up on some of the stuff that we missed out on being gone. This was mostly family visits, some camping trips, and college football (which is only a few weeks away from starting up again – go Vols!). The time abroad was an opportunity of a lifetime that I’m glad that we took. Now its time to start another adventure at home.
